Bullying has been a problem in schools for years.  More and more, we are seeing the impact that bullying can have on all children, but especially children with disabilities.  This webinar will review New York State regulations related to bullying, what rights families have in the process, how schools are required to respond, and how to work with families to make sure that their children are safe.  We’ll also examine the impact bullying has on social and emotional development and mental health in children and the role of social media in bullying.

 

About the Presenter:

Jennifer Sibley is the Family Support Services Program Director and a credentialed Family Peer Advocate at NRCIL in Watertown, NY.  She has been working with families of children with disabilities for 13 years.  In her time as an FPA, she has supported military families as the Fort Drum FPA and has worked under the US Department of Education Grant as a Parent Training and Education Coordinator to provide advocacy and parent and community training in the northern 10 counties of New York State.  Her lived experience and her greatest joy comes from her two boys, Wyatt, who is 18 and has Autism and Tyler, who is 4 and is neurotypical but a bundle of endless energy!

This workshop will explore the nature of a child’s behavior and when a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) should be requested. We will describe the process by which a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) are developed, share tools and strategies to support student success, and provide tips to support students and parents to actively participate in the process of developing these plans.
