Training for Resiliency: Helping Children and Youth Grow in the Face of Adversity

When: Wednesday, July 20 - 1:00 PM

Duration: 2 hours

Location: Zoom

Event Details:

During this important training, we will hear about The Generally speaking, resilience is the ability to adapt in the face of extreme trauma and adversity. Resiliency is not an individual trait that young people have or don’t have.  It is a process that entails a set of skills that help children, youth and adults increase their capacity to grow, heal and recovery from trauma and adversity.  Resilient capacities can be compromised by ongoing and accumulating stress, especially among children and youth.  Everyone is born with this basic human capacity and it is present in every young person.  According to Dr. Nan Henderson, resiliency is “hard-wired into the human make-up,” and, most importantly, can be taught.  Just as we all have a capacity to learn, we all have the capacity to grow more resilient over time.

In this training Dr. Nan Henderson will provide an overview of resiliency and strategies that services providers can use to promote it in children and adolescents.  Dr. Henderson will be joined by Stefanie Miller, the Coalition Coordinator for Building Resilience in Essex Families (BRIEF), a network of community-based service providers focused on prevention.  Dr. Henderson and Ms. Miller will provide strategies for promoting resiliency through direct intervention with children and youth, as well as through efforts to inform, educate and partner with services providers across systems.
