Stress is unavoidable and not all stress is bad. This presentation will examine the types and levels of stress and explore the developing capacities for infants and young children to manage stress. This presentation will explore the impact of negative stress and trauma on brain development and functioning, the hierarchy of the stress response, and its impact on relationships. The relationship between co-regulation and self-regulation will be described and the “Self-Reg” framework will be presented with 5 core domains of stress identified.


The evidence for the connection between cumulative stress and unfavorable health, social and mental health outcomes will be described through the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) studies. Risk and protective factors will also be examined, and strategies for reducing stress will be presented.
