Addressing Trauma with Multigenerational Latinx Families

When: Tuesday, September 27 - 1:00 PM

Duration: 1 hours

Location: Zoom

Event Details:

Hispanic Heritage Month aims to celebrate the colorful cultures and significant achievements of Hispanic-American people in the United States. While so many success stories have inspired us, there are many stories of trauma and resilience that go overlooked. Recognizing the unique experiences and challenges that impact the mental health of Latinx communities is critical to help ensure that they thrive.

Dr. Okosi reviews topics including intergenerational trauma, cultural identity, attachment, and cultural humility as they relate to the unique needs of Latinx families in the United States. Many Latinx families have unique immigration stories that may be traumatic on their own, and having children in a new cultural context can present additional challenges between generations. Dr. Okosi discusses her work with Latinx families and provides perspective on tailoring clinical work to meet specific needs of this population.

By the end of this presentation, those in attendance will be able to:

1. Identify prevalence and types of traumatic events commonly experienced by the Latinx community
2. Learn how to identify intergenerational trauma patterns related to cultural identity
3. Use strategies to incorporate cultural humility into your clinical practice with Latinx families
