Early Onset Persistent Depressive Disorder
When: Tuesday, January 24 - 1:00 PM
Duration: 1 hours
Location: Zoom
Event Details:
Persistent depressive disorder (PDD, also known as Dysthymia) is a long-term mood disorder where people may experience sadness, low self-esteem, and hopelessness along with other cognitive impacts. Because these are chronic symptoms, they can be difficult to identify until the symptoms intensify and present as a major depressive episode.
Children and youth today are facing more stressors at home and school and they may also be worried about other issues such as household finances, racial injustice, and environmental concerns. These stressful life events and other risk factors can contribute to PDD and impact adulthood. Additionally, experiencing childhood adversity and having family members with a history of depression may also increase the risk for PDD. This webinar discussed this important but often overlooked diagnosis by focusing on early onset PDD in the midst of the youth mental health crisis.
Participants were able to:
- Understand the symptomatology of PDD
- Identify risk factors for PDD
- Recognize the importance of screening for and assessing PDD
- Distinguish how PDD is similar to and differs from major depressive disorder (MDD)
- Gain exposure about the treatment of PDD
