The Role of YPAs in Residential Settings

Working in a youth residential setting presents unique challenges for Youth Peer Advocates (YPA) due to the environment and youth needs. Residential settings include but are not limited to Residential Treatment Facilities (RTF), Children’s Community Residences (CCR), inpatient hospital visits, and youth group homes. Through this training, YPAs in residential settings and their supervisors will gain valuable insight into the role, responsibilities, and expectation of a YPA in this setting. Further topics include how to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, establishing professional boundaries, YPA crisis intervention, and wellness strategies. 


About the Presenter

Meghann Simpson, YPA-C

Meghann is a Youth Peer Advocate with lived expertise regarding trauma and mental illness. Her personal experience and college education pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Social Science has given her insight into the need for trauma-informed mental health services. Meghann has supported a variety of populations including but not limited to adults experiencing serious mental illness, victims and survivors of DV & IPV, re-entry felons, LBTQIA+  individuals, and youth experiencing severe behavioral, mental, and emotional health challenges. Through her work at Families Together in New York State, Meghann intends to educate YPAs on trauma and trauma-sensitive practices in order to provide the community with the highest quality of care.
