Understanding and Treating Personality Disorders Part 1: Foundations of Personality Disorders in Clinical Practice

When: Wednesday, September 17 - 12:00 PM

Duration: 1 hours 30 minutes

Location: Zoom

Event Details:

Clinicians working in behavioral health settings with adults often encounter complex, misunderstood presentations of personality disorders that are compounded by systemic stressors. Attachment disruptions, identity instability, and emotional regulation difficulties are frequently misinterpreted as treatment resistance or manipulation, which strains therapeutic alliances and increases the risk of burnout. Without clear, trauma-informed frameworks, clinicians may struggle to provide effective, consistent care.

This two-part training directly addresses these gaps by providing a structured, attachment-based approach that integrates practical tools to manage challenging dynamics while maintaining professional boundaries and fostering therapeutic progress. The focus will be on practical, evidence-based approaches for identifying and treating personality disorders among adults in community and agency-based clinical settings where complex presentations are common. This training series is intended for adult-serving providers specifically.

In Part 1 of this series, participants will learn how to define personality disorders within diagnostic frameworks like the DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 and differentiate personality disorders from other mental health conditions. Dr. Fox will provide an overview of the core features of key personality disorders such as Borderline, Narcissistic, Histrionic, Antisocial, and Obsessive-Compulsive, and examine the role of attachment, trauma history, and developmental factors in personality formation. Additionally, Dr. Fox will introduce the impact of personality pathology on treatment dynamics.
