Although most people think of depression as something that mainly affects adults, children and adolescents can develop depression as well. Unfortunately, many children with depression go untreated because it may not be recognized as such.

It's normal for kids to feel sad, down, or irritated, or to be in bad moods from time to time. But when negative feelings and thoughts linger for a long time and limit a child's ability to function normally, it might be depression.

When we thoroughly understand the symptoms of depression and the reasons children develop it, we can intervene in a helpful manner.

While adults and children with depression tend to look sad, children and teens may also present with an increase in irritability and anger as well. Kids with depression may lose interest in activities and schoolwork, and attendance.

Depression can make kids feel worthless, rejected, or unlovable. It can make everyday problems seem more difficult than they actually are. When depression is severe, it can lead kids to think about self-harm or even suicide.

This clinical intensive will be an opportunity for providers to learn about childhood depression and the common elements associated with successful treatment of childhood depression.  This training will also include opportunities for practice and feedback.

The goals for this clinical intensive are to:

  • Learn the signs, symptoms, and clinical presentation of depression in youth
  • Review DSM 5 criteria and learn the use of standardized measures to evaluate depression in children
  • Learn contemporary practices for the treatment of depression in children, including cognitive restructuring, social skills training, and relaxation techniques
  • Develop effective problem solving and treatment planning skills to treat depression in children
