Mental health treatment is frequently viewed as “one-size-fits-all” but this approach can actually make it difficult for people to feel supported and get the help they need. The concerns and experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth are different compared to the larger population. The intersection of sexual and gender identity and mental health present unique challenges for clinicians in effectively addressing their needs. It is necessary for clinicians to understand and validate the experiences of this community in order to support their mental health wellness.

This webinar will focus on the importance of creating inclusive clinical environments. It will provide an overview of biosocial theory and the unique forms of traumatic invalidation LGBTQIA+ youth experience as well as structural Interventions to ensure a more inclusive environment.

This webinar will further include a discussion of the appropriateness of applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to this population and navigating sexual and gender explorative behaviors in DBT treatment. Clinicians will learn tips and skills that they can begin to consider and implement in practice with youth and families.
