The Community Technical Assistance Center of New York (CTAC) is pleased to invite you to our upcoming Strengthening Trauma Awareness and Resiliency Skills (STARS) offering for mental health providers working with children, youth, parents, caregivers, and/or families in New York State. STARS provides participants with the opportunity to practice applying the principles of Trauma Informed Care (TIC) to their work, and to learn practical strategies to support their work with children, youth, and families that have experienced trauma.

Summary:

Despite being part of a cultural and linguistic minority, Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals are frequently mischaracterized through a lens of disability or deficit, and often endorse feeling marginalized from both the Hearing and Deaf communities with difficulties internalizing a clear identity. Most deaf and hard of hearing children are born to hearing parents that do not know American Sign Language (ASL). Communication difficulties between these children and their hearing, non-signing families have been associated with increased dysregulation in Deaf youth.

Summary:

This presentation will provide an overview of the RHY service model, including key definitions and common needs and experiences of youth involved in these programs.  A review of the services offered in RHY programs will be discussed, along with community partnerships, appropriate referrals, and mental health provisions.  A key portion of the session will focus on the 2025 changes to New York State Mental Hygiene Law. They will explain what prompted the change, what the law allows, when it goes into effect, and what mental health and substance use providers need to understand to stay in compliance and best serve youth.

In this training, we’ll explore how music shapes our mood and energy. We’ll discuss music therapy, a widely recognized approach for promoting mental health and supporting addiction recovery, illustrating how sound can serve as a tool for emotional healing and self expression.

Using an empirical framework, this course will provide a look at who is at risk for loneliness, the signs of loneliness, and effective ways to reduce social isolation and loneliness while promoting overall mental and physical health outcomes for clients and consumers.

This event will feature a panel of RHY and OMH providers, who will discuss how to foster collaboration between mental health/substance use services and RHY programs. Panelists will highlight the importance of developing these service partnerships to meet the needs of RHY, and offer a concrete example of a successful collaboration between Family of Woodstock and Maverick Psychotherapy. They will share lessons learned and strategies to address common challenges. Panelists will also discuss how the 2025 updates to the New York State Mental Hygiene Law impact collaborations between RHY and Mental Health/Substance Use agencies.
