Since the sunset of the Social Work Exemption in June 2022, OMH and OASAS have worked to clarify the roles and activities professionals of various disciplines can perform in their settings. OMH and OASAS have collaborated with NYSED Office of Professions to present an overview of diagnostic privileges for licensed mental health counselors (LMHCs), licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and licensed psychoanalyst employed in OMH and OASAS programs. This presentation will provide and overview of diagnostic privileges and will focus on OMH and/or OASAS providers only. Private practices and/or other service settings will not be covered in this presentation. OMH and OASAS will review the common questions received from individuals and programs regarding diagnostic privileges, demonstrate how to access the information to answer these questions, and provide scenarios of how this applies to the activities in OMH and/or OASAS settings. However, assessing risk is important to reduce harm or even mortality in all treatment settings. Important tenets of risk assessment protocols include trauma informed and guided clinical interviews as well as a focus on both risk and protective factors. Youth Peer Advocacy is unlike any other role in that it necessitates a skill that is often overlooked, that skill being authenticity. In this training, YPAs will gain skills on how to build authentic connections with youth and how to operate authentically as a YPA. We will also begin to uncover circumstantial elements that inhibit authenticity in personal and professional settings. Working in a youth residential setting presents unique challenges for Youth Peer Advocates (YPA) due to the environment and youth needs. Residential settings include but are not limited to Residential Treatment Facilities (RTF), Children’s Community Residences (CCR), inpatient hospital visits, and youth group homes. Through this training, YPAs in residential settings and their supervisors will gain valuable insight into the role, responsibilities, and expectation of a YPA in this setting. Further topics include how to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, establishing professional boundaries, YPA crisis intervention, and wellness strategies.

Knowing how to facilitate family peer support groups is an essential skill for Family Peer Advocates. Support groups are a great way for caregivers to receive a variety of help, information, and education. They are often a space where caregivers have opportunities to share their experiences in a safe setting, develop supportive relationships, and gain hope. This presentation will go over these benefits and more of leading peer support groups. It will also cover the skills needed to facilitate a group, tips and tools for starting and running a support group; all of which often encourages a sense of community, empathy, and helpful discussions.

In this offering, you will learn about different forms of technology-facilitated sexual violence, the prevalence of intimate image sharing in these vulnerable populations, the harms this form of violence causes to victim-survivors, ways service providers can support victim-survivors and their caregivers, and basic principles for educating clients about TFSV. This webinar will briefly review why having ADHD can predispose youth to trauma and PTSD. The main focus will be on treatment methods, taking careful consideration of the ADHD diagnosis, since it often gets neglected in trauma-related therapy. Various treatment modalities will be discussed including cognitive-behavioral therapy, executive functioning coaching, dialectical behavior therapy, narrative-oriented approaches, acceptance and commitment therapy, and pharmacological treatments. There is a rapidly burgeoning literature around telehealth’s effectiveness and potential to increase engagement in care for youth with anxiety and related disorders. However, there is virtually no data on the effectiveness of hybrid approaches to care (i.e., treatment courses that include a mix of both telehealth and in-person services for a single client) nor guidance about what youth characteristics should suggest use of one modality over another. Thus, with increasing resumption of in-person therapy services alongside the continuation of telehealth, clinicians are left with little guidance about how to make recommendations for whether a given client would most benefit from therapy services delivered via telehealth versus in-person versus hybrid.  This webinar first will provide an overview of gold standard treatment recommendations for youth anxiety and related disorders. Then, it will offer practice-based recommendations guided by the three-legged stool for evidence-based practice in psychology to aid clinicians in making decisions on how and when to proceed via telehealth or not for anxious youth.

Thoughtfully and meaningfully supporting Southeast Asian/American youth and families requires understanding the high levels of trauma that have impacted and continue to impact the community across generations. This workshop will provide a primer to the field of critical refugee studies as a way to assess the links between Southeast Asian/American mental health and U.S. militarism, migration laws, and racial capitalism. Attendees will also participate in interactive activities to practice applying clinical approaches using a critical refugee studies lens in their mental health practice.

Sibling violence and sexual abuse is an under-discussed issue in the field of social services. Despite being more common than abuse by a caregiver or other adult, and equally damaging in its effects on children and youth, violence by siblings is less frequently reported to legal or child welfare authorities and does not generally command the same response as other forms of child maltreatment. Sibling violence and sexual abuse is often overlooked or written off as “sibling rivalry” by both caregivers and practitioners. And yet failure to identify and address the issue can lead to long term detrimental effects for all members of a family system. It is essential that service providers develop greater awareness and understanding of the nature of sibling violence and sexual abuse, its impact on children, youth, and families, and the development of methods of prevention and intervention.

Participants will have an opportunity to connect with fellow MHOTRS providers as well the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). These events will be interactive and attendees should come prepared to actively engage and share their experiences. Discussions will focus on the implementation of Part 599 regulation changes, peer support services, off-site services, and if available, updated programmatic guidance. In order to allow these events to focus on specific geographic considerations, meetings will be held in each of the five OMH regions. Do you ever struggle to speak with a parent or caregiver about their teen's mental health? Talking to youth about their stressors can be an opportunity for parents and caregivers to offer information, support, and guidance. However, there can sometimes be challenges to fostering a connection between a caregiver and a teen. Mental illness in youth can be hard for caregivers to identify and understand. In honor of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, this training for providers working with youth and families will focus on engaging with Latinx caregivers so that they can be a part of their teen's treatment team and support improving their mental health. Teens are facing a mental health crisis and this is especially true for Latinx youth. Parents and caregivers are essential to their child's mental health treatment whether or not they participate in parent or family sessions frequently. As a provider, you can support them by incorporating brain-based counseling techniques.

Children are socialized to learn what it means to be a boy or a girl. They learn this from older children, caregivers, and other influences around them. This learning process, starting at birth, begins early and continues into puberty and adulthood. However, gender is more of a spectrum, with many individuals identifying and expressing varying degrees of both femininity and masculinity, while some choose to ignore the gender binary and experiment with their self - expression. Transgender is a label for people who have a gender identity that is different from the one they were assigned at birth. Gender identity and expression are central to the way we see ourselves and engage in the world around us. This is really true for transgender and gender - expansive children and teens, for whom family support is incredibly important. In fact, research reflects that gender - affirming behavior on the part of caregivers and other adults (family members, teachers, etc.) greatly improves mental health and well - being. And, the opposite is true too - transgender children are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and are at greater risk of other challenges when their caregivers are hostile or rejecting. It has also been found that transgender youth are at greatest risk of suicide (compared to their non - transgender peers) as a result of rejection, bullying, and other victimization. All young people — regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression — deserve to be safe, supported, and healthy.

Built on the three pillars of Understanding, Awareness, and Action, the ITC first illuminates new perspectives on substance use and the process of change; next, it creates a foundation of self-awareness to allow willingness to engage with emotional pain. Finally, it emphasizes action, teaching communication and behavior skills to promote and support new behaviors. Bring powerful evidence-based insights and support tools to your recovery work. Participants will leave the training with a complete set of ideas and tools to be brought into their recovery support work, as well as a connection to our growing community of clinicians, social workers, researchers, and families who draw from the ITC Approach.

This training will review the Consumer Centered Family Consultation Model (CCFC), which was developed at the Family Institute for Education, Practice and Research at the University of Rochester over a decade ago. CCFC was developed as a time limited (1-3 sessions), burden reducing, consumer driven, recovery supporting, and highly practical approach. This model engages the consumer in a process designed to assist them in making an informed decision to involve others in support of their recovery, treatment, and other services. The emphasis is on the consumer’s choices and preferences. CCFC promotes collaboration between consumers, one or more members of their social support system, and the service provider.

Summary:

KEY is a psychoeducational, workbook-based program with identified sessions for addressing a wide range of topics that are relevant to the lives of transition-age youth, ages 16-24. Topics include stress and coping, relationships, school and work, mental and physical health, and substance use. KEY was developed to be consistent with culturally responsive, trauma-informed and resilience building principles and is designed to be implemented as a group intervention but can also be used individually.  The intervention can be delivered by clinicians, paraprofessionals or peers as part of an integrated service to address the needs of TAY. Agencies or programs serving TAY are encouraged to attend the training as a team.

Bullying can have a lasting impact on everyone involved: the person being bullied; bystanders who witness bullying; and the person who bullies others. The effects of bullying can also be long-lasting and is linked to many negative outcomes including impacts on mental health, substance use, and suicide. Lucas offers tips on how mental health providers can better support marginalized communities through an intersectional and harm reduction lens.

On April 1, 2023, updated billing guidance for Office of Mental Health (OMH)-hosted Integrated Outpatient Services (IOS) providers went into effect. The purpose of the updated billing guidance is to resolve payment challenges by providing MMCPs and OMH-hosted IOS providers with a separate set of rate codes which will differentiate the billing for primary care and behavioral health services. In addition, OMH established a separate set of rate codes which will identify off-site services and pay the enhanced rate for behavioral health services provided by OMH-hosted IOS clinics. This updated guidance is applicable for both Medicaid Fee-for-Service and Managed Care. In this pre-recorded webinar, partners from OMH review the IOS provider application process, address these billing changes, how to resolve payment challenges for IOS providers, review scenarios, and provide responses to questions received to date.

The original ACEs study examined the impact of early adversity on adults. Cendie Stanford learned about ACEs when she came across the ACEs questionnaire on a copy machine. This experience launched her on a path to developing a greater understanding of ACEs in her life and a career in raising awareness about ACEs to promote healing, recovery and growth in her communities. In that journey, she has come to create her own ACEs Genealogy to better understand the legacy of trauma and resilience in her family. The negative effects of layered relational trauma, particularly as experienced through childhood abuse and neglect, have long been recognized as contributing factors toward the development of Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD), a diagnostic entity included in the International Classifications of Diseases, 11th revision (ICD-11). During this important training, we heard about The Felt Sense Polyvagal Model™ (FSPM) and how it shifts the current pathologizing paradigm to a strength-based approach.

The first half of this presentation began with a brief discussion of the definition of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), its epidemiology, and DSM-5 update. It then focused on guidance for completing a thorough, yet brief, risk assessment of the behavior using the SOARS Model, which included a discussion about what questions to ask, why to ask those questions (based in theory and research), and how to ask those questions. The second half of this presentation focused on treatment and resources, including a detailed discussion of the CBT-based Treatment for Self-Injurious Behaviors (T-SIB) and a cursory review of Emotion Regulation Group Therapy (ERGT). The presentation concluded with discussion, including time for questions and answers.

Single parenthood is on the rise, but little research addresses the implications for mental health professionals who work with single-parent clients. The presenters conducted a qualitative research study to examine single parenthood from the parental perspective and, from that analysis, drew relevant therapeutic implications. The purpose of this webinar is to explore the results of that study, situated within the available data and literature on single parenthood, and discuss implications for clinical practice when working with single parent clients.

Just as the importance of understanding the Adverse Childhood Experiences study is to clinical practice, understanding an individual’s SDOMH can help uncover social and behavioral factors that impact their health. Some students may not qualify for an IEP, but may receive accommodations and modifications from a 504 Plan or may receive support through Response to Intervention (RTI). #StopAsianHate has become prominent within mainstream media, as hate crimes and acts of discrimination against members of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities has increased. This presentation will explore historical and contemporary examples of racism and discrimination within these communities and explore their impacts on mental health and well-being. This two-part webinar series will offer mental health providers an overview of MI and how it can be applied to the LGBTQIA+ community. Across both webinars, participants will have the opportunity to practice applying these skills through a vignette-based activity. In part two,  Drs. O’Neill and Gilea will focus on the application of MI as a therapeutic approach to support the adjustment-related needs of caregivers of their LGBTQIA+ youth. The presenters will offer a brief overview of the basic tenets of MI and discuss their therapeutic application to caregivers of LGBTQIA+ youth. Through the use of a case study, the presenters will highlight the therapeutic possibilities of this approach to help resolve caregiver ambivalence and increase opportunities for supportive caregiver responses for LGBTQIA+ youth.

By using the tools and insights of the Polyvagal Theory, Deb will help providers help clients find their way back to safety. Providers will learn to bring awareness to the cues that signal fear or discomfort in clients and will learn and understand the ways in which we can attend to those experiences and help clients return to regulation. This virtual clinical intensive will help participants to do the following: -Build self-confidence and a sense of agency by focusing on the natural healing capacity every individual possesses. -Increase resilience in individuals by enriching their natural healing capabilities and providing them with helpful tools and skills to overcome challenges.  -Decrease the transmission of trauma and perpetuation of adverse experiences from one generation to the next by alleviating the debilitating effects of trauma -Empower individuals to thrive in their own lives and support their physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. -Utilize the ideas of polyvagal theory to help clients feel safe enough to get to the real issues so they can heal from trauma, depression and other mental health challenges.

This two-part webinar series will offer mental health providers an overview of MI and how it can be applied to the LGBTQIA+ community. Across both webinars, participants will have the opportunity to practice applying these skills through a vignette-based activity. In part one, Dr. McGeough will focus on applying MI to support the coming out process for LGBTQ youth. This presentation will include a brief overview of the principles of MI and past research about using this approach with youth and LGBTQ people. The presenter will discuss how tools of MI (e.g., Menu of Possibilities, Decisional Balance, Goal Attainment Scaling Tool, and Elicit-Provide-Elicit Framework) can be applied to supporting LGBTQ youth with the coming out process.

Sometimes the sexual behaviors of children are more than just harmless curiosity and are outside the normal range of development. At times, the sexual behavior of children becomes harmful to themselves and to other children. Guidelines do exist to help determine when to be concerned about the sexual behavior of children. This webinar will discuss these guidelines as well as some of the best practices regarding treating problematic sexual behavior. With proper intervention, children with problematic sexual behavior often do not continue to have problematic sexual behavior into adolescence and adulthood.

New York State employees are playing a pivotal role in supporting New Yorkers during the COVID-19 pandemic. To help those employees who may be feeling overwhelmed or anxious because of the COVID-19 emergency, the NYS Office of Mental Health has developed a State Employee Wellness toolkit, one component of which is a 60 minute live presentation with an OMH behavioral health expert. This presentation will be held on January 14th from 2pm-3pm

Dr. Anderson will share the core competencies of racial socialization as a communication strategy to support youth of color to gain coping strategies for racially specific stressors. The Community Technical Assistance Center (CTAC) is partnering with Youth Power at Families Together in New York State to offer a 5-session Documentation Done Right learning community for supervisors of Youth Peer Advocates in New York State. In order to meet requirements, all providers need to develop a working knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of documentation. The purpose of this learning community will be to review the Documentation Done Right Workbook Series, to share best practices in documentation, and provide supervisors with guidance on how to use the workbooks with Youth Peer Advocates to practice these skills.

Understand the consequences of preschool expulsion and implicit bias and their direct effect on children’s social/emotional development and future school readiness. Discuss interventions that can help to reduce expulsion rates including early childhood mental health consultations. Recognize the impact that implicit bias may play within our own practices, how to think critically about the consequences, and how to support children facing these issues and their caregivers.
